Kenya is making history as it prepares to host the Road to BAL Elite 16 basketball tournament, a landmark event set to revolutionize African basketball. From November 28 to December 3, 2024, the Kasarani Indoor Arena and Nyayo Stadium will become battlegrounds for elite teams vying for a spot in the prestigious Basketball Africa League (BAL).

This tournament is more than a game; it’s a transformative opportunity for the sport across the continent. Backed by the NBA and FIBA, the event underscores the league’s expansion and Africa’s growing presence in global basketball.

Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) Chairman Paul Otula expressed immense pride in Kenya’s hosting role, calling it a milestone for both the nation and African basketball.

“This is a monumental achievement for Kenya’s basketball community,” said Otula. “It’s a reflection of our resilience and talent, and it’s our chance to shine on the global stage.”

The tournament will feature top-tier teams including City Oilers (Uganda), NBA Academy, Urunani BBC (Burundi), M.B.B. (South Africa), Bravehearts Basketball (Zambia), Matero Magic (Malawi), and Fox Basketball Club (South Sudan). However, all eyes will be on Nairobi City Thunder, the reigning Kenyan champions, eager to dominate on home turf.

Coach Brad Ibs of Nairobi City Thunder couldn’t contain his excitement about the home advantage.
“There was a lot of uncertainty about where and when the event would take place, but now we’re thrilled to have it here, in front of our fans,” Ibs said. “We’ve been sending a clear message to the world: beware of Kenyan basketball.”

The Thunder have been sharpening their skills since their Premier League triumph, and star player Tylor Ongwae is confident in their preparations.
“After the last round of qualifiers, we worked on our mistakes,” said Ongwae. “We’re ready to deliver strong results.”

Beyond the court, the tournament is expected to boost local businesses, attract fans, and strengthen Kenya’s reputation as a hub for international sports. The KBF has called on the government, sponsors, and fans to rally behind this historic event.

“This isn’t just a win for Kenyan basketball; it’s a win for the entire continent,” Otula stated. “Together, we can make this event a success and secure a brighter future for African basketball.”

For Nairobi City Thunder, this is more than a competition—it’s a chance to shine on the global stage and cement Kenya’s legacy in basketball history.
