The Luo music fraternity has been thrown into mourning following the death of popular musician Tony Ndiema, whose health had deteriorated rapidly just days after family and friends appealed for financial assistance to support his treatment.

Tony Ndiema passed away after battling a serious illness that saw him transferred to Oasis Hospital in Kisii for specialised medical care. Before his death, his family revealed that his condition had worsened significantly, leaving him unable to walk or speak, and appealed to friends, fans and well-wishers to help raise funds for his medical expenses.

His death has sparked an outpouring of grief across the entertainment industry, with fellow musicians paying glowing tributes to a man they described as a talented artiste, a dependable colleague and a cherished friend.

Leading the tributes was celebrated Ohangla musician Prince Indah, who said the industry had lost one of its own.

“From the same music industry where dreams were nurtured, from the same grounds of toil where laughter once echoed, this evening we stand united in silence, bound not by festivity but by a great loss. One of our own, Tony Ndiema Wuod Okinyo, has taken a final bow,” Prince Indah said.

He described Ndiema as a familiar face whose contribution to the Luo music scene would never be forgotten.

“Though death has dimmed a light among us, it cannot erase the footprints he left in our performing halls and shared podiums, nor the impact he made in the hearts of his fans. As a colleague and a friend, I join the family in mourning a pillar. We honour a life that will forever remain part of us,” he added.

Veteran Luo musician Emma Jalamo also conveyed his condolences, saying Ndiema’s passing was a huge blow to both his family and the wider Luo music fraternity.

“On behalf of myself and as a fellow Luo artiste, I extend my deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Tony Ndiema. His passing is a great loss not only to your family but also to the Luo music fraternity and everyone whose life he touched through his talent and friendship,” Jalamo said.

He prayed for strength and comfort for the bereaved family, adding that Ndiema’s legacy would continue inspiring generations of musicians and fans.

Before his death, the family had thanked Prince Indah, Elisha Toto, Uncle Eddy, Omondi Ngoe and other well-wishers who had stepped in to support Ndiema during his illness.

Tony Ndiema’s death marks yet another painful loss for Kenya’s music industry, with colleagues and fans remembering him for his passion, dedication and contribution to the growth of Luo music.

Burial and funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family.
