Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) National Chairperson Gladys Wanga has sharply criticized Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei’s proposal to extend presidential and other elected leaders’ terms from five to seven years, calling it “absurd and out of touch with the issues facing Kenyans.”
Following an ODM leadership meeting in Kisumu on Thursday, Wanga, also the Governor of Homa Bay, urged Cherargei to withdraw the Bill, arguing it distracts from pressing issues like the high cost of living and healthcare.
This proposal is unacceptable and should not see the light of day. Kenyans are grappling with critical issues such as food security, healthcare, and the high cost of living, yet Senator Cherargei presents a proposal to extend political terms,” Wanga stated. “We urge him to shift his focus to matters affecting the common mwananchi.”
Recent public feedback in Nairobi saw most Kenyans reject the Bill, with some suggesting the proposal aims to divert attention from vital reforms, such as the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) transition to the Social Health Authority (SHA), which faces significant challenges. Cherargei, however, claimed that 60 percent of Kenyans support his proposal, though his remarks were met with skepticism.
He also reported receiving threats after his personal phone number circulated online, resulting in thousands of calls and messages.
Cherargei’s party, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), has since distanced itself from the proposal.
