Residents of Kisumu have vowed to launch a WhatsApp fundraising group to raise money for young Kenyan cyclist Victor Ngugi after a mechanical failure forced him to finish last in the men’s junior road race at the ongoing African Road Cycling Championships in the lakeside city.

Ngugi’s bicycle chain reportedly developed a problem during the final lap, forcing him to abandon the leading pack and walk from the Central Bank area to the finish line along Ang’awa Avenue at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Ground.

Despite the setback, spectators applauded and carried him aloft, praising his determination, fighting spirit and commitment to finishing the race.

The incident sparked outrage among some residents, who questioned the government’s provision of equipment for Kenyan cyclists. They alleged that Ngugi had been forced to compete on a bicycle that was not suitable for professional racing, with some claiming it had been purchased second-hand from the Patels Flats area.

One spectator called on Kenyans to contribute whatever they could towards purchasing a new bicycle for the young cyclist.

“I have enjoyed the race, but the challenge is one. Kenyans, let’s be serious. Ngugi has been let down by his bicycle chain. That bicycle is not meant for this race. We must contribute even KSh1 to buy him a new bike,” the fan said.

The proposed WhatsApp initiative is expected to mobilise well-wishers to support Ngugi following the mechanical setback, although details of the fundraising arrangements had not been announced.

Zimbabwe’s Nicholson Rohnan won the race in a time of 3:06:12 to claim the African title.

Despite the disappointment in Kisumu, Ngugi is expected to represent Kenya at the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, scheduled to begin on October 31, 2026.

The African Road Cycling Championships have brought together athletes from 32 African countries, with the competition expected to conclude on Sunday.
