Kisumu County Woman Representative Ruth Adhiambo Odinga has issued a blistering condemnation of Kibuye Market chairlady Judith Matengo, popularly known as Nyaramba, after she allegedly assaulted and injured two female traders.

Ruth said the violent conduct captured in widely shared videos was unacceptable, criminal, and a clear case of gender-based violence perpetrated by a woman in leadership, with the apparent involvement of male accomplices.

“Under my watch, Kisumu will not tolerate or condone acts of violence, gender-based or any form of violence for whatever reason and from whichever quarter it originates, overtly or covertly,” she said in a press statement issued on Wednesday, November 19.

She noted that after closely following Matengo’s arrest and subsequent remanding over charges of assault and public disorder, the circulating footage revealed conduct that went beyond mere criminality.

“I am concerned that beyond the alleged criminal conduct, this was also a classic case of gender violence meted out to the victim by a fellow woman, with the apparent complicity of male goons,” she said.

The legislator urged traders, market leaders, and county authorities to uphold peace, particularly as the country approaches the political campaign season. She warned that Kisumu will enforce zero tolerance for violence, especially against women, in line with national laws and international commitments.
She stressed that violence in a major economic hub like Kibuye Market threatens the livelihoods of thousands, disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable.

“It is particularly disheartening when a woman in a position of leadership is accused of orchestrating violence against fellow women. As leaders, women should not replicate patterns of aggression. We ought to lead by example in cultivating solidarity, respect and non-violence,” she added.

Ruth called for deeper reflection on how to shield women leaders in markets from political manipulation and ensure leadership remains rooted in service, not division. She emphasised that every trader has the constitutional right to political opinion without intimidation.

The lawmaker urged security agencies and the judiciary to handle the case transparently and protect witnesses from threats.

“I will personally be following this case to ensure that justice is done and seen to be done,” she noted, cautioning against cases collapsing due to investigative or procedural failures.
