Mourners at a funeral in Lwanda Nyamasare village, Kasgunga Ward, Homa Bay County, were left stunned after a political confrontation between sitting Kasgunga MCA Nura Odongo and his challenger, aspiring MCA Hesbon Dondi, descended into a physical fight.

The incident occurred during the funeral service for Mama Miriam Awuor Obonyo, which had initially proceeded peacefully before Dondi was handed the microphone to address mourners.

Things quickly turned ugly when Dondi launched a scathing attack on Odongo, declaring that his political career was coming to an end and warning him to prepare to leave the Homa Bay County Assembly after the 2027 General Election.

Dondi accused the incumbent MCA of failing to deliver development for the people of Kasgunga while allegedly using public office to enrich himself and secure employment opportunities for his children.

“What do you want again? You’ve employed your children and now you’re planning to steal elections. Prepare for 2027; you are going home without any second thought. Your wife is an MCA—go and eat the retirement money,” Dondi told the mourners.

The remarks appeared to anger Odongo, who grabbed the microphone before the confrontation escalated into an exchange of blows and kicks, turning the funeral gathering into an unexpected spectacle.

Dondi also dragged Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga into the political showdown, accusing her administration of allegedly using goons to disrupt a Linda Mwananchi rally in Homa Bay.

He challenged Odongo to convey a message to the governor that residents would not tolerate what he described as “goonism” in the county.

“People have died in Homa Bay. We are condemning what happened. Hon. Nura, tell your boss Gladys Wanga that we don’t want goonism in Homa Bay. We are not happy with what happened,” Dondi said.

Dondi further alleged that the governor was behind the melee and claimed that the reported number of deaths following the rally did not reflect the actual toll.

He accused the county administration of concealing information about the casualties, although he did not provide evidence to substantiate the claim.

The dramatic confrontation brought the funeral proceedings to an abrupt and chaotic moment, leaving mourners to witness an unusual clash between two politicians expected to face off for the Kasgunga MCA seat in the 2027 elections.

The allegations made by Dondi against Governor Wanga and the claims regarding deaths could not be independently verified.
