Kisumu County Deputy Governor Mathew Ochieng Owili has officially announced his intention to vie for the county’s gubernatorial seat in the 2027 elections. Owili made the declaration on Saturday, November 30, during the burial of former county staff Julius Ogendo Otiende in Kajulu, Kisumu East Sub-county.

Speaking to mourners, Owili emphasized his experience and readiness to lead Kisumu after Governor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o’s tenure. “When the time comes, I will offer myself for the position of governor. In Kisumu County, if you look at those with the experience and the vision to build on the foundation laid by Governor Nyong’o, I am one of them,” Owili asserted.

Owili praised the late Julius Otiende, describing him as a dedicated civil servant who excelled in his role as a finance officer during the transition from former Governor Jack Ranguma’s administration to Nyong’o’s. “Governor Nyong’o valued Mr. Otiende so much that he urged him not to retire early, as his work was exemplary,” Owili said.

The deputy governor also addressed recent political rumors, reiterating his allegiance to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). He dismissed claims of ODM defecting to Kenya Kwanza, stating, “ODM remains a strong and independent party. The individuals seconded to the national government are there to contribute to its functioning, not as defectors but as professionals supporting a broad-based government.”

Owili called on Kisumu residents to rally behind Governor Nyong’o for the remainder of his term, highlighting the achievements made during their administration. He also expressed confidence in his capability to continue Nyong’o’s legacy.

“I have worked closely with the governor and share his foresight. I am ready to take Kisumu forward when the time comes,” he said.

Owili’s declaration sets the stage for what is expected to be a competitive race for the Kisumu gubernatorial seat in 2027.
