A Makueni County Executive Committee Member (CECM) has been suspended for 45 days following public outrage over her remarks linking menstruation to crocodile attacks.

Sonia Nzilani, the CECM for Trade, Marketing, Industry, Culture, and Tourism, sparked controversy last week during the burial of a 17-year-old girl who was fatally attacked by a crocodile while fetching water from Athi River. Nzilani claimed that menstruating women should avoid fetching water because their “smell” attracts crocodiles.
“Crocodiles mostly attack women, especially when they are on their periods. The smell produced during menstruation attracts crocodiles. Parents should monitor their children and avoid sending them to fetch water during this time,” Nzilani stated, remarks that quickly went viral and ignited public backlash.
In response, Machakos Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili announced the suspension, emphasizing the need for accountability and sensitivity from public officials.
“The comments, interpreted by many as insensitive and dismissive of menstrual realities, have understandably caused widespread discontent,” Mulili said in a press statement.
“To address the public’s concerns, the County Government has decided to suspend the CECM for 45 days to allow a thorough investigation into the matter,” she added.
Mulili underscored the administration’s commitment to gender equity, child welfare, and menstrual hygiene awareness. She highlighted initiatives like “Keeping Girls in School and Ending the Period of Shame,” which aim to dispel harmful myths and empower girls in Makueni County.
“Freedom of expression, as enshrined in Article 33 of the Kenyan Constitution, is not absolute and must not infringe upon the dignity and rights of others,” she noted, reiterating the administration’s dedication to inclusivity and respect for all residents.
Nzilani’s suspension has sparked national debate on the need for public officials to champion progressive values and avoid perpetuating harmful stereotypes.
As investigations proceed, the focus remains on addressing the concerns of Makueni residents and reinforcing efforts to promote gender equality and menstrual health awareness.
