Kenya’s Under-20 national football team, the Rising Stars, are ready to make a bold statement as they gear up for their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON U-20) appearance. Set to face former champions Morocco in a high-stakes Group B match on Thursday night at Cairo’s 30th June Stadium, the team is determined to prove they are here to compete, not merely participate.

Assistant coach Anthony Akhulia issued a defiant challenge ahead of the match, asserting that the Rising Stars have far-reaching ambitions. “We are not here just to fill up the numbers,” Akhulia declared at the pre-match press briefing, emphasizing that the team is focused on making an impact in their AFCON debut.

Despite some setbacks in the squad, Akhulia expressed confidence in the depth of his players. “Without mentioning names, at least three players will be unavailable, but from the squad of 25 players, we still have a solid team to deliver on our goals,” he added.

Captain Amos Wanjala, defender for Athletic Club Torrellano, echoed Akhulia’s sentiments, stressing the team’s aspirations beyond a mere group-stage finish. Highlighting a recent 2-2 draw with Ghana, Wanjala pointed out that the team has shown they can challenge any opponent. “We possess the tools to hurt any side in Cairo,” he said, vowing to address defensive mistakes and work toward securing a World Cup slot.

For young players like Aldrine Kibet, who plays for Spain’s Nastic Sports Academy, the tournament offers a rare platform to advance their careers. “This is a massive opportunity,” said the 18-year-old. “It’s a chance to showcase our talents to the continent and the world.”

Morocco, who will be Kenya’s first opponents, are not underestimating the Rising Stars. Coach Mohammed Ouahbi acknowledged Kenya’s strength, noting, “We know they enjoy moving with the ball and have prepared countermeasures.” Moroccan captain Mouad Dahhak added, “We have analyzed Kenyan videos and are confident we will emerge victorious.”

The thrilling encounter between Kenya and Morocco is set for 9 pm local time, with Tunisia facing Nigeria in the group’s earlier match. It promises to be a dramatic opening day in Group B.
