Kenya Premier League (KPL) giants Gor Mahia, popularly known as K’Ogalo, defeated Uganda’s Kitara FC 9-8 in a tense post-match penalty shootout to claim the Piny Luo Cultural Festival Title. The thrilling match, held after a goalless 90 minutes, marked the official launch of the 20,000-seater Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium in Siaya County.

President William Ruto, who graced the occasion, announced cash rewards of Ksh 2 million and Raila Odinga Ksh 1 million for both Gor Mahia and Kitara FC as appreciation for their contributions to the event.
“We are going beyond our boundaries to promote multinational sports competitions, deepening cross-border harmony, boosting talent exchange, and enhancing regional integration,” President Ruto remarked. “I congratulate Gor Mahia for outclassing the Royals in a thrilling match.”

Ruto also committed to completing the stadium, now 90% finished, and highlighted the government’s plans to invest in Siaya County. These include Ksh 400 million for development projects in Obambo, Akala, and Riat, as well as constructing 900 affordable housing units in Bondo and Akala.
“This year, 2025, is the year of greatness,” Ruto emphasized, promising further improvements in roads, water infrastructure, and market access for agricultural produce from Nyanza.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni echoed Ruto’s sentiments, stressing the importance of East African unity and trade. Museveni expressed gratitude to both Ruto and Odinga for fostering regional harmony.
The Piny Luo Cultural Festival, which brought together thousands from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Sudan, Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Luo diaspora, showcased the global unity and diversity of the Luo community. Participants gathered at Got Ramogi, a site of cultural significance, to reflect on their heritage and celebrate their shared identity.

This memorable event not only highlighted the power of sports in fostering unity but also underscored the potential of cultural festivals to strengthen regional ties.
