Kenya Lionesses stamped their authority on the international rugby stage with a resounding 17-0 victory over hosts South Africa, clinching their second consecutive World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series title in Cape Town.

The emphatic win not only reinforces Kenya’s dominance but also moves them closer to securing core status in the HSBC SVNS Series for the 2025 season. Just a week after their maiden Challenger Series leg title, where they edged Argentina 17-12, the Lionesses showcased their growing prowess with another stellar performance.

Head coach Denis Mwanja’s squad displayed tactical mastery and rock-solid defense, shutting out South Africa despite their home support. Naomi Amuguni, Sharon Auma, and Freshia Oduor delivered decisive tries, with Oduor’s late effort sealing the victory and triggering wild celebrations at Athlone Stadium.

Kenya’s path to the final was marked by determined performances, including a hard-fought 12-5 semi-final win over Colombia. They also triumphed over Uganda (10-5) and Belgium (17-5) in earlier rounds, proving their consistency and resilience.

With both Challenger Series trophies in the bag, the Lionesses now turn their focus to the HSBC SVNS promotion-relegation playoff in Madrid this May. A successful run there would see them join the world’s elite women’s rugby sevens circuit—an unprecedented achievement for Kenyan rugby.

This latest triumph cements Kenya’s status as a rising force in women’s rugby, and with their eyes now set on Madrid, the Lionesses are poised to make history once again.
