Reigning champions Gor Mahia are gearing up for a high-stakes showdown against league leaders Tusker FC in a pivotal FKF Premier League fixture at Kenyatta Stadium this Sunday. Interim coach Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno has emphasized the importance of the match, labeling it a critical test for his side’s title aspirations.

Tusker reclaimed the top spot with a narrow 1-0 midweek win over Bandari, rebounding from their 2-1 upset against Shabana. The Brewers now lead the standings with 30 points, three clear of KCB and Kenya Police FC, and six ahead of Gor Mahia, who have three games in hand.

“We’re well-prepared and in good form as a team,” Otieno said confidently. “Thankfully, we don’t have any injuries, so everyone is available. Tusker is always a strong opponent, but as defending champions, we’re ready to show our quality.”

Gor Mahia will benefit from the return of key players, including Alpha Onyango, Sylvester Owino, Ronney Onyango, and playmaker Austin Oduor, who recently featured for the Harambee Stars in the Mapinduzi Cup.

Otieno also acknowledged the intensity of their schedule, with back-to-back matches against Sofapaka and Kakamega Homeboyz following the Tusker clash. “The boys are professionals. They know every match matters. It’s tough, but we’re taking it one game at a time,” he added.

Tusker, under head coach Charles Okere, will have their own reinforcements, including Chrispine Erambo and red-hot forward Ryan Wesley Ogam, returning from international duty. However, they will miss Shaphan Oyugi Siwa, who has joined Tanzanian outfit Kagera Sugar FC, while defender Mike Kibwage remains out with a knee injury.

The weekend action promises to deliver thrills across the league. KCB will seek to reclaim the top spot against struggling Nairobi City Stars, while Kariobangi Sharks host Ulinzi Stars, and Kakamega Homeboyz face Bidco United. Mathare United travel to Awendo to face Mara Sugar, and Bandari will aim to end a five-match winless streak against Shabana.

Kenya Police FC, hosting Murang’a Seal at Police Sacco Stadium, could leapfrog into contention for the top spot if results elsewhere go their way.

With just over a third of the season played, the FKF Premier League is shaping up as a battle royale, and this weekend’s fixtures are set to further ignite the race for supremacy.
