Hussein Mohammed has been elected the new President of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), marking a pivotal moment in Kenyan football. Former international McDonald Mariga will serve as his Vice President, ushering in what many hope will be a transformative era for the sport.

The elections, held after months of contention, saw Hussein Mohammed emerge victorious in a competitive re-run, securing 43 votes. His closest rival, Doris Petra, received 31 votes, while Barry Otieno garnered 10. Despite no candidate initially achieving the required 50%+1 threshold, Petra and outgoing President Nick Mwendwa conceded, paving the way for Mohammed’s unopposed victory.

In a congratulatory statement, Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen lauded the new leadership, emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting Kenyan football’s growth.

“I made a solemn promise during my vetting for this docket that I would unlock the election impasse in the FKF and enforce the law on term limits. That promise has been fulfilled today,” said Murkomen.

He further commended Mohammed and Mariga, expressing confidence in their ability to revitalize the federation.

“This should send a message to all federations who frustrate efforts to hold elections that their time is up. Good governance in sports is not negotiable,” added Murkomen.

Outgoing President Nick Mwendwa’s tenure was marred by controversy, including governance concerns and strained relations with stakeholders. The election of Mohammed is seen as a fresh start for Kenyan football, with hopes of improved management and a renewed focus on developing the sport at all levels.

Doris Petra, the first female FKF Vice President, gracefully conceded defeat, emphasizing the need for unity and progress within the federation.

The government has pledged its unwavering support for the new team, with stakeholders expressing optimism about the future of football in Kenya under the leadership of Hussein Mohammed and his team.
