The highly anticipated second leg of the 2025 LOOP Safari Gravel Series is set to unfold in Machakos this Saturday, March 8, as over 250 cyclists prepare to tackle the region’s rugged yet scenic gravel terrain.

Organized by the Amani Project in partnership with LOOP, the event aims to boost Kenya’s cycling scene, nurture emerging talent, and solidify the country’s reputation as a premier global cycling hub.
LOOP DFS CEO Eric Muriuki expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming race, emphasizing the Machakos course’s unique blend of challenge and beauty.
“This region offers the perfect mix of tough terrain and stunning scenery, making it an ideal addition to the LOOP Safari Gravel Series. We are proud to support a platform that fosters competitive cycling while building a thriving community of passionate riders,” he stated.
Race Categories and Course Overview
The event will feature four race categories designed to accommodate cyclists of varying skill levels:
- 120 km LOOP – A grueling endurance test for elite cyclists.
- 60 km LOOP – Tailored for experienced riders and seasoned enthusiasts.
- 20 km LOOP – A manageable yet demanding route for amateur cyclists.
- 5 km LOOP – A junior category for riders under 18.
The Machakos course promises a mix of smooth dirt roads, twisting single tracks, and punishing climbs, offering riders an exhilarating test of speed and endurance against the county’s stunning hilly landscapes.
Elite teams in the 120 km category will be vying for podium finishes, with cash prizes of KES 125,000, KES 100,000, and KES 70,000 up for grabs for the top three teams.
Hanifa Said, Director of Operations at the Amani Project, highlighted the importance of bringing the race to Machakos for the first time.
“This marks a major milestone in our mission to expand cycling opportunities across Kenya. Preparations are in full swing, and we are confident that this event will provide a challenging yet rewarding experience for all participants,” she said.

Building on an Electrifying Season Opener
The 2025 LOOP Safari Gravel Series launched in Tatu City last month, attracting over 500 cyclists from across East Africa. The opening leg saw thrilling performances, with two-time champion Jordan Schleck successfully defending his elite men’s title in the 120 km race with an impressive 3:42:06, while Xaverine Nirere claimed victory in the women’s category, clocking 4:06:05.
Following the Machakos race, the series will continue with two more high-stakes competitions:
- Naivasha – June 15 (UCI-accredited event)
- Vipingo – August 23
As anticipation builds, Machakos is poised to deliver an electrifying cycling spectacle, combining fierce competition, endurance, and breathtaking scenery in one of Kenya’s most exciting sporting events of the year.
