Kenya’s football giants, Gor Mahia, are ready to light up the pitch in their much-anticipated friendly clash against Uganda Premier League (UPL) side, Kitara FC, this Thursday, January 2, 2025. The high-stakes game will mark the grand finale of the Piny Luo Festival 2024 at the state-of-the-art Siaya Stadium.

This event promises to be nothing short of spectacular, with high-profile guests including Kenya’s President William Ruto, Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni, and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga expected to grace the occasion.
Gor Mahia’s team manager, Victor Nyaoro, confirmed the team’s return to training at the MPESA Foundation grounds in Thika following the Christmas break. The friendly serves as both a warm-up and a tactical test ahead of their FKF Premier League showdown against Tusker FC on Saturday, January 5, 2025.
“We’re back in action and fully focused,” Nyaoro affirmed. “This week is crucial with two tough matches lined up. We’re taking nothing for granted.”
Kitara Steps In, Yanga Steps Out
Originally, festival planners had invited Tanzanian heavyweights Yanga SC for the friendly, but a packed schedule saw the Tanzanians withdraw to focus on their CAF Champions League clash against DRC’s TP Mazembe on January 4. Enter Kitara FC, a side Nyaoro describes as “an equally worthy opponent.”
“Plans changed, but Kitara FC is no pushover. We’re ready to face a solid team,” he said.
Eyes on the Prize
As Gor Mahia chases their 22nd Premier League title, Nyaoro emphasized their resolve to finish at the top this season.
“The competition is fierce, but our sights are firmly set on the trophy. Retaining it would be a historic moment for the club,” he declared.
Currently sitting third on the FKF Premier League table with 24 points, Gor Mahia trails leaders KCB and Tusker FC by just three points after 14 matches. Kitara FC, meanwhile, is 7th on the UPL table with 17 points from 13 games, boasting four wins and a draw in their last five outings—better form than Gor Mahia’s two wins in the same period.
A Festival to Remember
With a thrilling game, celebrated guests, and the vibrant atmosphere of the Piny Luo Festival, all eyes will be on Siaya Stadium this Thursday. Can K’Ogalo rise to the occasion and give fans a taste of what’s to come this season?
