The Kisumu County Security Committee has vowed to intensify its crackdown on criminal gangs following a deadly confrontation between two organised groups that left two young men dead in the city on Sunday.

In a strongly worded statement, the committee said the violence witnessed in Milimani was not an isolated case of youthful misconduct but a serious act of organised criminality that would be met with the full force of the law.
The incident plunged two families into mourning and reignited concerns over rising gang-related violence in Kisumu. Authorities have already arrested eight suspects linked to the killings, who are expected to be arraigned in court today as investigations continue.
Security agencies are also analysing digital evidence, including videos and other materials circulating on social media, to identify and apprehend more suspects involved in the violence.
“The County Security Committee has resolved that organised criminal activity will be confronted decisively. Those responsible for yesterday’s violence will be identified, arrested, prosecuted and held fully accountable under the law,” the statement read.
The committee warned that individuals involved in criminal activities, whether acting independently or on behalf of political or commercial interests, would find no refuge in Kisumu.
Authorities further expressed concern over the economic impact of insecurity, noting that violence discourages investment, disrupts business activities and undermines job creation opportunities for young people.
“Criminality is not only a threat to public safety but also a direct attack on economic growth and development,” the committee stated, adding that all lawful avenues would be pursued to dismantle criminal networks and prosecute those behind them.
The committee also issued a stern warning to politicians and aspiring leaders, cautioning against sponsoring violence or recruiting youth into criminal gangs for political gain.
“Political competition must never become a licence to finance violence. Anyone found organising, facilitating or funding criminal activities, directly or indirectly, will face the full consequences of the law,” the statement warned.
According to the committee, an ongoing countywide security operation has already led to the arrest of more than 200 suspects. The operation will continue until criminal networks are dismantled and public confidence in security is restored.
The committee commended the National Police Service for its swift response during Sunday’s violence, particularly around St Stephen’s ACK Cathedral and St Joseph’s Catholic Church, where officers prevented further bloodshed.
As investigations continue, the committee extended condolences to the bereaved families and urged young people to reject violence and embrace education, innovation and lawful economic activities.
“The future of Kisumu will not be secured through intimidation, violence or criminal enterprise. It will be built through education, hard work, innovation and responsible citizenship,” the statement said.
The County Security Committee reiterated that criminality, whether organised, opportunistic or politically sponsored, will not be tolerated, insisting that the law will be applied firmly, fairly and without compromise to safeguard peace and prosperity in Kisumu County.
