The clergy in Kisumu have called on the government to uphold justice and protect freedom of expression as a way of honouring the legacy of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, whom they hailed as a tireless defender of democracy and human rights.

Speaking during a special prayer service at Opoda Farm in Bondo, Nomiya Church Archbishop Cardinal Moses Teddy Ayoma urged the state to avoid returning the country to what he termed “the dark days” when dissenting voices were silenced.
“We all know the kind of fight Raila fought to end injustices. To mourn him the right way, let’s practice justice because that’s what he always stood for,” said Rev Ayoma. “Let’s not take back the country to a time when if you spoke, you were silenced. Freedom of expression must be safeguarded.”
Archbishop Ayoma also lauded the ODM National Executive Committee for its recent meeting in Nairobi, saying it was a positive step towards restoring unity within the party. He, however, cautioned party leaders against divisive politics and urged them to preserve Raila’s inclusive vision.
“ODM is not a Luo party, it’s a party for all Kenyans. Baba built it with blood and strength, so let’s not scatter anyone. The threats and intimidation within the party will only destroy what he left behind,” he said.
The cleric further emphasized that true leadership within the Luo community and the ODM party should be guided by divine intervention, not political manoeuvring.
“If it comes to the issue of a kingpin, it’s not about election or appointment, God will give us one. Let unity reign in the community and in the party,” he added.

Rev Ayoma described Raila as a visionary who dedicated his life to change, dignity, and justice, lamenting that his death came before he could fully prepare his followers to sustain his democratic ideals.
“Raila Amolo Odinga stood for change. He never taught us how to live with people who don’t respect democracy or how to celebrate thieves. He taught us to protect the nation’s dignity and ensure resources reach everyone,” Ayoma said solemnly.
Meanwhile, Dr. Ida Odinga, the widow of the late ODM leader, expressed her gratitude to various groups including politicians, widows, nurses, and a delegation from Migori led by former Governor Zachary Okoth Obado for visiting her family home to condole with her during this difficult time.
