The world, and particularly the Catholic faithful, is united in mourning following the death of Pope Francis, the 266th leader of the Roman Catholic Church, who passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on Monday morning at the Vatican Apostolic Palace.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis made history as the first pontiff from the Americas and the first Jesuit to ascend to the papacy. His death was confirmed in a solemn statement by the Vatican Press Office, announcing that the Holy Father passed on at 7:36 AM after battling respiratory complications since February 14.

“With profound sorrow, we announce that His Holiness Pope Francis has returned to the house of the Father,” the statement read. “His devotion to the poor, to peace, and to dialogue remains a beacon for humanity.”

Elected in 2013 following the unprecedented resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, Francis was widely regarded as a reformist leader. He adopted a simpler lifestyle, fought corruption within the Vatican, and championed causes such as climate action, interfaith dialogue, and social justice. His progressive approach redefined the papacy for a modern era.

Across Africa, particularly in Kenya, Pope Francis leaves behind a deep and lasting impact. During his 2015 visit to Nairobi, he passionately urged young people to stand firm against corruption and tribalism. His Swahili greeting, “Bwana Asifiwe” (Praise the Lord), and his heartfelt plea for peace remain vivid memories for many Kenyans.

In Nairobi, Catholics gathered in large numbers to hold vigils and special masses in honor of the late pontiff. At Holy Family Basilica, Archbishop Philip Anyolo led an emotional service, describing Pope Francis as “a shepherd of hope for the world’s forgotten.”

Kenyan President William Ruto, in a statement from State House, mourned the pope’s passing, calling him “a spiritual giant whose humility, compassion, and courage inspired millions, regardless of faith.” Opposition leader Raila Odinga also paid tribute, tweeting: “He was a voice for the voiceless. The world has lost a moral compass.”

The Vatican has now entered a formal period of mourning. In the coming days, the College of Cardinals, led by Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrel, will oversee the funeral arrangements and prepare for a conclave to elect Pope Francis’ successor.

Pope Francis will be remembered not just as the Bishop of Rome but as a transformative global figure — a man who embodied mercy, simplicity, and inclusivity. His often-quoted phrase, “Who am I to judge?” became a defining symbol of a papacy that opened new doors of compassion and understanding across the world.
