The Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, Dr. Raymond Omollo, spearheaded flood response efforts in Busia and Kisumu counties, as the government ramps up support for affected communities.

During his visit to Bunyala Sub-County, Busia, Dr. Omollo assessed the impact of flooding, oversaw relief distribution, and engaged with displaced families. At Lunyofu Primary School, which now shelters 500 households, he supervised the delivery of essential supplies, including rice, beans, blankets, and medical kits.
“We are committed to ensuring the safety and recovery of every affected family. Beyond immediate aid, we must prioritize long-term solutions, such as extending dykes and constructing an upstream dam to regulate water flow and support irrigation,” Dr. Omollo stated.

Busia has seen over 3,000 households displaced by the floods. The PS stressed the urgency of resettling families in safer areas and called for adherence to safety directives, such as avoiding hazardous zones and heeding evacuation orders.
In Kisumu County, Dr. Omollo visited the Ogenya Displaced Persons Camp, housing 1,973 households, where he inspected health surveillance measures to prevent outbreaks of waterborne and vector-borne diseases. He engaged with local leaders on strategies including enhanced drainage infrastructure, early warning systems, and flood risk education.
“Tree planting is a critical tool for mitigating climate change, securing our environment, and addressing food security challenges,” Dr. Omollo said, urging residents to participate in the monthly Chief’s Climate Action Day.

The nationwide floods have displaced over 3,970 households, caused 12 fatalities, and disrupted transport and agriculture. A multi-agency response team, including the Kenya Red Cross and the National Disaster Operations Center, has been lauded for its swift action.
Dr. Omollo also addressed fishermen’s concerns about recent arrests in affected areas, assuring that measures are being taken to improve the situation. He highlighted the Taifa Care universal health program, urging families to register for affordable healthcare.

Accompanied by Budalangi MP Hon. Raphael Wanjala, Kisumu Women Rep Hon. Ruth Odinga, and Busia County Commissioner Mwachaunga Chaunga, Dr. Omollo reinforced the government’s commitment to both immediate relief and long-term resilience.
“Our priority is not just recovery but building stronger, safer communities to withstand future challenges,” he emphasized.
