More than ten Principal Secretaries, led by Interior PS Dr Raymond Omollo, on Friday converged in Kisumu for a high-level inspection of priority government projects across the region.

The delegation, drawn from the Governance and Public Administration Committee and other state agencies, is assessing progress on major national investments and reviewing the performance of various state departments.

Speaking to the press in Kisumu, Dr Omollo said the tour is part of a coordinated government effort to evaluate ongoing interventions and accelerate service delivery.

“Besides coordinating all government programs, we are also assessing various government projects and interventions. Because we are in the Nyanza region, we have picked four key projects that we are visiting,” Omollo said.

The PSs are inspecting the new control tower at Kisumu International Airport, the Kenya Maritime Training Centre, the Lumumba Affordable Housing Project, and the Kisumu International Convention Centre (KICC), a facility initiated during the 9th Africities Summit in 2022.

Omollo noted that although the convention centre stalled at some stages, construction has since resumed. He added that the government has invested heavily in maritime operations on Lake Victoria to boost search-and-rescue capabilities, enhance navigation, and strengthen the blue economy. The new airport control tower, he said, is 100 per cent complete and awaiting commissioning.

Omollo, who chairs the Governance and Public Administration Committee, revealed that the PSs began their day with a strategic meeting to review ongoing programs across state departments under the committee.

“The purpose of the meeting, which we hold regularly, is to review different programs we run as state departments. Of note is the progress we have made in service delivery. We also reviewed bills, policies, and other programs affecting the security sector,” he said.

Aviation and Aerospace Development PS Teresia Mbaika said renovations at Kisumu International Airport are meant to elevate the facility to global standards.

She emphasized that aviation is a highly regulated sector, requiring compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. The government is currently expanding the remaining 300 metres of the 3.5km runway and modernizing the terminal building to match international requirements.

Mbaika added that the Kisumu upgrade will also ease congestion at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Kenya’s primary entry point.

“Aviation is highly regulated, and we must meet ICAO standards. That’s one of the reasons we initiated the construction of the new tower and the modernization works,” she said.
