Residents of Karachuonyo West Sub-county are set to enjoy improved access to clean and safe water after the government committed Sh605 million to a major water supply project targeting the entire sub-county.
Interior Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo said the investment is part of the government’s broader development agenda aimed at improving livelihoods by addressing the long-standing water shortages that have affected thousands of households.
Speaking during an inspection of ongoing government projects before addressing a public baraza in Karachuonyo West, Omollo said the water project will serve all three wards in the sub-county.
“The government has invested Sh605 million in water supply for the entire sub-county covering the three wards, and this will improve access to clean and safe water for our people,” said Omollo.
He noted that the project is expected to significantly improve sanitation, boost public health and support economic activities by ensuring residents have reliable access to water.
The Principal Secretary urged residents to safeguard public infrastructure, saying government investments can only achieve their intended impact if communities take ownership of the projects.
“Development can only be achieved when government and the community work together to protect public investments and support ongoing projects,” he said.
Omollo also expressed concern over the rising cases of transformer vandalism, warning that the illegal activities were frustrating efforts to connect more households to electricity under the government’s Last Mile Connectivity Programme.
He called on residents to work closely with security agencies by reporting those behind the destruction of public infrastructure.
“We must protect the infrastructure that has already been put in place, and those who engage in vandalism must face the law,” he said.
On road infrastructure, the PS announced that the government had revived projects that had stalled for years, including a 67-kilometre road launched in 2018 that is now under active construction.
He revealed that a total of 88 kilometres of roads in Karachuonyo West will be upgraded to bitumen standards at Sh5.2 billion, a move expected to ease transport and unlock economic opportunities in the area.
“For many years people waited for these roads, but today work is progressing, and we expect the entire 67-kilometre stretch to be completed. Altogether, 88 kilometres of roads will be tarmacked at Sh5.2 billion,” Omollo said.
The Principal Secretary further appealed to parents to ensure all school-going children remain in school, noting that the government continues to invest heavily in education through teacher recruitment, improved school infrastructure and financial support for learners.
He also urged political leaders and residents to maintain peace and political tolerance by allowing all aspirants to campaign freely ahead of the next General Election, saying a peaceful environment is critical for sustained development.
