Kisumu County Governor Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o has commended residents for maintaining peace and order during Wednesday’s commemoration of the first anniversary of the Gen-Z protests.

“I wish to thank the residents of Kisumu County for maintaining peace today during the activities of commemorating the first anniversary of the Gen-Z protests,” said Governor Nyong’o in an official statement issued on Wednesday, June 25.

The governor noted that Kisumu City and other towns across the county’s seven sub-counties remained calm throughout the day, despite the nationwide demonstrations held in memory of those who lost their lives during last year’s anti-Finance Bill protests.

“The streets in Kisumu City and in other towns in the sub-counties remained relatively calm throughout the day,” he observed.

Prof. Nyong’o praised Kisumu residents for their vigilance and steadfast commitment to defending human rights and freedoms in Kenya. He lauded the county’s legacy of peaceful, constructive dissent in the face of political oppression and human rights abuses.

“Kisumu continues to lead by example when it comes to expressing constitutional rights and defending the democratic space in our republic,” he added.

The peaceful commemorations came amid demonstrations in major towns across Kenya, where Gen-Z protesters took to the streets to honour victims who were brutally killed during last year’s protests against the controversial Finance Bill 2024/2025.
