On Friday, December 13, 2024, the world tuned in to witness the much-anticipated debate among the three candidates vying for the African Union Commission Chairmanship. Among them, Raila Amolo Odinga stood out as the clear front-runner, according to Kisumu Governor and ODM Interim Party Leader, Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o.
“I have spoken with my academic colleagues across Africa who watched the debate, and the verdict is unanimous: Raila Amolo Odinga outperformed the other candidates, who also gave it their best,” Prof. Nyong’o stated.
Odinga’s extensive experience as the AU High Representative for Infrastructure Development provided him with a unique edge. His responses reflected a deep understanding of the AU’s workings and a practical vision for its future. Prof. Nyong’o highlighted that Odinga approached the debate with “calmness and a sense of purpose,” emphasizing a transformative vision for the continent.
Central to Odinga’s vision is strengthening intra-African and intercontinental trade by prioritizing infrastructure development, including railways, roads, and maritime transport.
“He sees the AU as a vehicle for achieving self-reliant development that can propel Africa into becoming ‘the new first world’ within our lifetime,” Nyong’o added.
The debate has provided AU member states with a clearer picture of the leadership qualities required for the Chairmanship. Prof. Nyong’o expressed his confidence in Odinga’s capabilities, stating, “We are proud of you. Go Captain, go; Africa is eagerly waiting for your leadership as Chairman of the AU.”
As the AU member countries prepare to cast their votes, Odinga’s performance in the debate has left an indelible mark on the path to leadership, raising hopes for a united and progressive Africa under his stewardship.
