Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) in Siaya County have renewed calls to impeach Governor James Orengo following controversial remarks he allegedly directed at Gladys Wanga during a recent visit to Homa Bay County.
The MCAs, who had previously threatened to remove Orengo from office before abandoning the plan, now say they are determined to convene a special sitting to discuss his conduct and possible ouster.
The renewed political storm erupted after Orengo was captured on camera standing atop his vehicle and allegedly making insulting remarks against Wanga, who also serves as the national chairperson of the Orange Democratic Movement party.
His comments have triggered outrage among ODM supporters, with a section of party loyalists demanding that the veteran politician apologize and show respect to women leaders.
Orengo has recently maintained a hardline stance against the government’s broad-based political arrangement, accusing some senior ODM leaders of betraying the party’s ideals.
The Siaya governor has repeatedly accused Wanga and Junet Mohamed of “selling” the party to the Kenya Kwanza administration instead of safeguarding the opposition movement.
He has been spearheading anti-broad-based rallies under the “Linda Mwananchi” banner alongside leaders such as Edwin Sifuna, Godfrey Osotsi and Babu Owino.
The leaders have been criticizing the government over corruption, the high cost of living and what they term as failure to address the plight of ordinary Kenyans.
Political analysts now view the escalating fallout as part of a wider supremacy battle within ODM, with Orengo perceived as positioning himself for greater influence in the party amid growing succession politics surrounding longtime ODM leader Raila Odinga.
