Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru says she is focused on finishing her term strong, despite ongoing speculation linking her to the 2027 presidential race.

The former Devolution Cabinet Secretary (CS) is serving her second and final term as governor, after being elected in 2017 and re-elected in 2022.
Waiguru emphasizes that now is not the time to plan for 2027, as her priority remains completing the work she began for the people of Kirinyaga.
I get asked this question frequently, and I will say this: with three years to go before the elections, my focus is on completing the work I started in Kirinyaga and supporting the government to fulfill the promises we made during our campaigns,” she said in an interview.
She added that the political landscape would become clearer by 2026. “For now, my focus is on the next two years. By the end of 2026, we’ll know what political direction we’ll take,” she noted.
Waiguru had been widely considered a contender for the Deputy President’s position following the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua in October. However, President William Ruto eventually nominated Kithure Kindiki.

In response, Waiguru indicated that, had she been nominated, she would have risen to the challenge.
“The call to service is a high responsibility, and for now, there is no vacancy for the Deputy President position. The issue doesn’t arise at this point,” she explained.
“However, looking to the future, we will see how the political scene develops—how the country and our regions evolve—and determine the best course of action,” she added.
It remains uncertain whether Waiguru will enter the 2027 race for State House.
