The Kenyan football community is in mourning following the death of Bob Munro, the pioneering founder of the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA) and Mathare United Football Club. Munro passed away on Sunday evening at his home in Westlands, Nairobi, at the age of 78, following respiratory complications.

In a moving tribute, his widow, Ingrid, highlighted his remarkable contributions to youth empowerment and football.

“Bob, as he was lovingly known in Kenyan football, had been in and out of the hospital for the past six months. He was a cherished father, grandfather, and a relentless advocate for young people. He took his final breath on January 19, 2025,” she said.

Munro founded MYSA in 1987 to empower underprivileged youth in Nairobi’s slums by merging football with life skills training. The organization tackled critical social issues like HIV/AIDS awareness, environmental conservation, slum health, and leadership development, providing a beacon of hope for thousands of disadvantaged young people.

Under his leadership, MYSA’s efforts gave birth to Mathare United Football Club, which became a prominent name in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League. The club won the Moi Golden Cup twice, in 1998 and 2000, and claimed its first league title in 2008.

National leaders joined the football fraternity in paying tribute to Munro. President William Ruto described him as a pillar of Kenyan sports and a champion for youth empowerment.

“Bob Munro was extraordinary. His dedication to nurturing talent and promoting youth empowerment will inspire generations to come,” President Ruto said.

Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohammed hailed Munro as a hero of grassroots and professional football development.

“Bob was instrumental in shaping the future of Kenyan football. His passion and vision will forever guide us,” Mohammed stated.

Munro’s contributions were formally recognized in December during Kenya’s 60th Jamhuri Day celebrations, where he was awarded the Elder of the Order of the Burning Spear (EBS) by President Ruto.

Through MYSA and Mathare United, Munro demonstrated the profound impact of sports in transforming lives and communities. His legacy lives on in the tens of thousands of young people whose lives he touched and the countless others who will benefit from his vision.

As Kenya bids farewell to a football legend and humanitarian, the nation reflects on his enduring legacy. Rest in peace, Bob Munro. Your impact on Kenyan football and youth development will remain unmatched.
