Kisumu RFC kicked off the year in emphatic style, delivering a commanding 38-9 victory over South Coast Pirates in the Obange Cup at Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium, Mamboleo, Kisumu, on Saturday, January 11.

The Obange Cup was organized to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the passing of former Kisumu RFC chairman Fidel Odinga. Strengthened by new recruits from Kabras RFC and five impactful loanees, Kisumu showcased their prowess with each loanee scoring a try.
A Tribute to Fidel Odinga
Kisumu RFC chairman Charles Kutwa paid tribute to Fidel Odinga, describing him as a man of the people who loved sports and supported the community wholeheartedly.
“Fidel could walk from Kondele to town, mingling with everyone. He loved sports and supported it immensely,” Kutwa said.
He commended the team for their victory and thanked fans and the Pirates for participating in the commemorative match.
“We hope Kisumu RFC will maintain this winning momentum. Rugby is a gentleman’s game, and before South Coast Pirates leave, we’ll sit down and celebrate together,” he added.

Fatigue Costs Pirates
South Coast Pirates captain Oduor and coach Kevin Amiani attributed their loss to fatigue after a grueling 27-hour bus journey.
“We lost steam in the second half when fatigue set in,” Amiani remarked, though he congratulated Kisumu RFC on their well-deserved win.
Despite the setback, the Pirates remain optimistic, with a home match scheduled next weekend.
“The fight is on, and we’ll survive in the Kenya Cup,” Amiani assured.
Dominant Performance by Kisumu RFC
The hosts scored six tries to secure maximum points. Although Pirates started strong with an early penalty by Kelly Akengo, Kisumu found their stride through a well-executed scrum move that led to a try by Victor Otieno. Felix Omondi’s try and David Williams’ conversion gave Kisumu a narrow 12-9 lead at halftime.
The second half was all Kisumu. Tries from their new recruits and resolute defense sealed a comprehensive victory. Kisumu RFC captain Christopher Otieno attributed their success to hard work during the December holidays.
“We’re ready for our next match against Impala RFC in Nairobi,” Otieno said, lauding the Odinga family for organizing the memorial event.

Looking Ahead
With their Obange Cup triumph, Kisumu RFC has set the tone for a promising season. Their next test comes against Impala RFC, as the team looks to build on this momentum.
The Obange Cup was a fitting tribute to Fidel Odinga, honoring his legacy while showcasing Kisumu RFC’s potential for greatness.
