Gor Mahia Deputy Patron Eliud Owalo has issued a heartfelt apology to K’Ogalo fans following the club’s disappointing 2-1 defeat to Nairobi United in the FKF Cup final, played on Sunday at Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Owalo acknowledged the growing frustration among fans after the club also failed to reclaim the Kenya Premier League (KPL) title. He revealed that the club’s top priority now is to revamp the technical bench and squad ahead of the 2025/2026 season.

“Unfortunately, we have lost the Mozart Cup as well. Apologies to Gor Mahia fans. Re-engineering the team ahead of next season is now a priority,” wrote Owalo.

The 21-time league champions were outplayed by a spirited Nairobi United side, who continued their fairytale season with a brilliant FKF Cup run. Frank Ouya gave the newcomers an early lead in the 7th minute before Enock Machaka doubled the advantage in the 74th minute. Ben Stanley Omondi pulled one back for Gor Mahia, but it was too little, too late.

Gor Mahia’s season has now ended in heartbreak, having already lost the KPL crown to Kenya Police FC just weeks earlier.

Nairobi United, who only just earned promotion from the National Super League, capped off their meteoric rise with the FKF Cup title and will now walk away with Ksh2 million in prize money. They also secure a historic spot in the CAF Confederation Cup, underlining their growing presence in Kenyan football.

Their route to the final was nothing short of dominant, dismantling Global Connection, Tusker FC, Githurai All Stars, Bandari, Kariobangi Sharks, Murang’a Seal, and finally toppling Gor Mahia to lift the cup.

In the third-place playoff, Murang’a Seal edged Mara Sugar 1-0 to claim Ksh750,000, with Mara Sugar settling for Ksh500,000. The cash prizes were courtesy of tournament sponsors Mozzart Bet.

Individual Awards:

  • Ernest Mohammed (Nairobi United) was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament, following his commanding performances between the posts.
  • Brian Michira clinched the Golden Boot Award as the tournament’s top scorer.
  • Despite Gor Mahia’s final loss, goalkeeper Matthews Otieno was recognized for his stellar performances and awarded the Golden Gloves Award.

Elsewhere, AFC Leopards concluded their club elections on Sunday with Boniface Ngaira Ambani emerging as the new chairman. Isaac Mulanda Mulindi was elected Secretary-General, while Newton Lime Luchacha clinched the Treasurer position after defeating rivals Edwin Chamwada and Patrick Kanyangi.
