President William Ruto is set to officially launch the Ksh. 1.3 billion East African Skills for Transformation and Regional Integration Project (EASTRIP) at The Kisumu National Polytechnic, where a state-of-the-art textile factory is nearing completion. The facility, now 90% finished, is expected to be operational within three months.

During a tour of the project on Monday, January 27, 2025, Dr. Esther Thaara Muoria, Permanent Secretary for the State Department for Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET), accompanied by Joel Arumonyang, Permanent Secretary for Roads and Public Works, expressed confidence in the progress. They highlighted that only a few elements remain before the facility is ready for launch.
“This project is one of five key initiatives under EASTRIP, and The Kisumu National Polytechnic is privileged to host this transformative venture. It aims to expand opportunities for youth to join TVET institutions and enhance their skills,” said Dr. Thaara.
Other institutions benefiting from EASTRIP projects include Kibit in the Ministry of Roads, Meru National Polytechnic, and others aligned with strategic sectors such as energy and public works.
Dr. Thaara emphasized the government’s commitment to equipping young people with technical skills. She noted that the oversight committee, chaired by her, is actively addressing challenges to ensure the project’s successful completion and operation.

Once completed, President Ruto will preside over the official launch, marking a significant milestone in Kenya’s push for technical and vocational education.
“The government is focused on achieving 100% youth transformation, ensuring no one is left behind at any educational level,” Dr. Thaara said.
The call to embrace TVET institutions comes shortly after the release of the 2024 KCSE results, which revealed that over 16,000 students will not qualify for university placements. Dr. Thaara urged these students to take advantage of TVET opportunities, with the application portal open until February 6, 2025.
“From a diploma, you can progress to a degree, master’s, and even a PhD. There’s no limit to your growth,” she assured the youth.
