Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) launched the “Tuzidi Kuinuana” (Let’s Keep Uplifting Each Other) campaign on Thursday at its Kisumu Plant, celebrating 20 years of Senator Keg Lager’s impact on Kenyan communities. The campaign reflects Senator Keg’s achievements in providing a safe alternative to illicit brews, supporting local economies, and generating tax revenue.

Launched in 2004, Senator Keg has offered an affordable and regulated beverage, reducing reliance on dangerous, illicit alcohol. The brand’s impact extends beyond sales, driving economic growth through partnerships with small-scale farmers, supporting sorghum production, and creating thousands of jobs across Kenya.

KBL Managing Director Mark Ocitti praised Senator Keg’s contribution to economic and social development, stating, “Senator Keg has become more than an alcoholic beverage; it’s a catalyst for positive change. This 20-year milestone shows the power of partnerships across our value chain to support safer drinking, sustainable livelihoods, and economic growth.”

Ocitti also lauded the Kisumu Brewery as a leading, modern facility blending traditional brewing with advanced technology, which now supports over 45,000 farmers, including 17,000 in Nyanza.

The event, attended by Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr. Mathew Ochieng Owili, Nyanza Regional Commissioner Flora Mworoa, and other dignitaries, highlighted Senator Keg’s role in reducing illicit alcohol consumption. Owili emphasized the positive impact on the local economy, stating, “KBL has been a partner in Kisumu’s growth, creating jobs, supporting local industries, and uplifting thousands of lives.”

Nyanza Regional Commissioner Flora Mworoa acknowledged KBL’s contributions to Kisumu’s economic landscape, job creation, and the battle against illicit brews. “KBL has been instrumental in fighting illicit alcohol, which has claimed lives in our communities. This battle can only be won through collective efforts,” Mworoa stressed.

According to Euromonitor International, Senator Keg’s low-cost sorghum-based formula has reduced the illegal alcohol trade, promoting public health and enhancing socio-economic stability, particularly in areas severely affected by harmful brews. Senator Keg also contributes significantly to Kenya’s tax revenue, aligning with national economic goals.

Over the years, Senator Keg has extended its impact through Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), bringing clean water, improving housing, and enhancing livelihoods for people throughout its supply chain. These initiatives underscore Senator Keg’s influence beyond its immediate consumers.

A key achievement for KBL was the 2017 revival of the Kisumu Brewery, originally established 40 years ago, with a Ksh. 14 billion investment. The facility has since helped KBL become Kenya’s largest buyer of white sorghum, cementing its role as a major supporter of local agriculture and economic growth.
