The fourth African Sub-Sovereign Governments Network (AfSNET) Conference commenced in Kisumu, Kenya, today, drawing global attention to the critical role of sub-sovereign governments in advancing intra-African trade and investment under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).

Held under the theme “Leveraging the AfCFTA for Sustainable Trade and Investment: A Development Pathway for African Sub-Sovereigns,” the conference is organized by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in partnership with the County Government of Kisumu and United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLGA).

Speaking at the opening session, Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o welcomed delegates and highlighted the significance of the event in addressing financing deficits and fostering economic collaboration.

“We are proud to host this momentous conference that seeks to bridge the financing gap and empower sub-sovereigns to drive sustainable trade and development,” said Governor Nyong’o. “I welcome all participants to Kisumu and urge you to explore the opportunities this city has to offer.”

Afreximbank initiated AfSNET as a platform to promote intra-African trade, educational exchanges, and cultural collaboration. The initiative aligns with the AfCFTA’s objectives, with a specific focus on empowering regional and local governments to contribute to Africa’s economic prosperity.

The conference, which runs from November 25 to 27, will feature an investment exhibition, trade promotion activities, and expert training on investment promotion. Delegates will also have the opportunity to network with stakeholders and explore avenues for economic collaboration.

Governor Nyong’o revealed that H.E. President William Samoei Ruto is set to officially open the conference tomorrow. “It is a privilege to have the Head of State grace this occasion, underscoring the importance of sub-sovereign participation in implementing AfCFTA,” the governor added.

Past AfSNET conferences have demonstrated significant impact, with the previous editions in Cairo, Abuja, and Durban generating deals worth over USD $1.5 billion and attracting hundreds of delegates.

Participants at the Kisumu conference are expected to build on this momentum, strengthening the role of sub-sovereign governments in advancing Africa’s trade and investment agenda.

As the host city, Kisumu is also using the event to position itself as a leading investment destination in the region. Governor Nyong’o encouraged visitors to explore the city’s tourist attractions, saying, “Kisumu is not only safe but also rich in cultural and natural beauty. Take time to discover what makes this city unique.”

The AfSNET Conference is poised to set the stage for transformative partnerships and economic breakthroughs, solidifying Kisumu’s role as a hub for trade and investment in Africa.
