Kisumu Governor Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o has urged young people in the county to seize the opportunity of subsidized training at local Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) to advance their careers and personal development.

Speaking at the launch of the Motor Vehicle Garage and Driving School at Rotary Vocational Training College, Nyong’o emphasized the county’s commitment to empowering its youth with practical skills.
“My government has allocated Kshs 90,525,000 for capitation grants to support youth enrolled in VTCs, ensuring they have the resources to succeed,” Nyong’o said.
“An additional Kshs 22 million will go towards the acquisition of tools and equipment, helping our institutions provide top-notch training.”

The Governor highlighted the county’s commitment to improving vocational education by approving the recruitment of 20 new trainers, who are expected to begin their work in January 2025. Additionally, Kisumu County has partnered with Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) under the KBEST programme to introduce blue economy courses, including aquaculture, marine technology, and sustainable environmental practices.
“We are also establishing eight Centres of Vocational Excellence this year, in collaboration with Commundo, with a focus on motor vehicle mechanics and aquaculture,” Nyong’o added.
“These Centres will serve as hubs for innovation, providing our youth with cutting-edge skills for emerging industries.”

The Governor also announced a partnership with the Stanbic Foundation to offer digital literacy programs, preparing the youth for active participation in the digital economy. He assured the gathering that Kisumu County’s Vocational Education and Training (VET) policy would provide a roadmap for future growth and sustainable development in vocational training.

The launch event was attended by various county officials, including Chief of Staff Daniel Opiyo, Communication Chief Officer John Oywa, Vocational Training Officer Bovince Ochieng, and members of the Kisumu County Assembly, including Education Committee Chair Seth Okumu and Budget Committee Chair Joakim Omieno.
