Nineteen officials overseeing the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams at Kebabe SDA Mixed Day and Boarding High School in Kisii County have been suspended after authorities uncovered rampant cheating at the center.

The suspension follows a KNEC officer’s discovery of 31 mobile phones in a boys’ dormitory, as well as three additional phones in an examination room, where questions and answers for the day’s Biology and CRE exams were being received. Illicit materials, including shorthand notes closely matching the ongoing exam content, were also recovered.
Following the incident, a team from the Sub-County Director of Education’s office quickly intervened and seized the materials. These items were then handed over to the Kenyenya DCIO, who has since launched a detailed investigation into the malpractice.
The suspensions include the school’s Center Manager, Deputy Center Manager, two supervisors, and 15 invigilators, all implicated in the breach. The police report confirmed the incident: “While on routine exam monitoring at Kebabe SDA Mixed Day and Boarding High School, a KNEC officer found a total of 31 mobile phones in one of the boys’ dormitories, with three more in an examination room streaming in questions and answers for the Biology and CRE exams.”
The investigation continues as officials work to address the serious breach in exam protocol.
