In a bold move to bridge the digital divide in Kenya, Safaricom has today launched its “Maisha Poa ni Digital” campaign in Kisumu. The initiative aims to accelerate internet access for millions of Kenyans still using 2G devices.

Speaking at the launch event on Friday, May 16, Safaricom’s Chief Consumer Business Officer, Fawzia Ali, expressed excitement about the campaign, emphasizing its urgent relevance in a rapidly digitizing world.

“We are very excited to be here in Kisumu to launch our campaign,” said Ali. “We chose to launch Maisha Poa ni Digital here because while the world is moving forward digitally, nearly half of Kenyans are still using 2G phones, what we call kabambe or katululu. That is not fair.”

Ali underscored that the government’s digital shift, combined with the rise of online business and social media driven employment, makes smartphone access no longer a luxury but a necessity.

“Many of our youth are turning to social media for work, as influencers, content creators, and online entrepreneurs. But how can they tap into these opportunities with outdated devices?” she said. “And our women, who are running small businesses, selling clothes, shoes, or food, can’t grow fast without a digital presence. That’s why we’re here.”

As part of the campaign, Safaricom is offering affordable 4G smartphones starting from Ksh. 5,499. To make the transition easier for new users, customers activating a Safaricom SIM on a smartphone will receive 5.5GB of free data: 1GB instantly to help them set up and download key apps like WhatsApp, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook, followed by 150MB daily for 30 days.

“We know the internet can feel new and overwhelming at first, so we’re walking with you,” said Ali. “We’ve partnered with top device brands: Nokia, Oppo, Infinix, Tecno, and Samsung, to ensure no one is left behind.”

The activation began on Thursday, May 15, 2025, and continues through Friday and Saturday, with Safaricom dealers and device partners on the ground to support customers with smartphones and exclusive giveaways.

The campaign marks a critical step toward digital equality, ensuring that even those in remote or underserved areas can tap into the internet’s vast potential, whether for work, education, business, or staying connected.

“When you’re online, you’re not just browsing, you’re finding markets, building community, and unlocking opportunity,” Ali concluded. “Your life is better when you’re connected.”
