The Government has expressed confidence in the level of preparedness for this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations, set to be hosted in Wajir County for the first time in history, citing steady progress across key infrastructure and logistical plans.

Speaking during an inspection tour of ongoing works on Thursday, Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, Dr Raymond Omollo, said the State was satisfied with the pace and coordination of preparations ahead of the June 1 national event.
Dr Omollo, who was accompanied by Defence Principal Secretary Dr Patrick Mariru and officials from various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, commended the collaboration between the National Government and Wajir County leadership in delivering what is expected to be a landmark celebration in Northern Kenya.
The delegation was received by Wajir Governor Ahmed Jiir, his deputy Ahmed Abdi, and county officials, who have been working jointly with the national administration since President William Ruto designated the county as this year’s host.
On-site assessments indicate that the main stadium is between 65 and 70 percent complete, with contractors working on a timeline expected to deliver the facility at least two weeks ahead of schedule. Key road networks within Wajir town and its access routes are also under construction, alongside refurbishment works at the County Commissioner’s residence, which will host the official State luncheon.
Water supply interventions, including borehole drilling and distribution systems, are ongoing through a partnership between the State Department for Water and the county government. In addition, the installation of generators has stabilised electricity supply in the area.
“We are encouraged by the progress made so far and the strong collaboration between the National Government and the County Government. From the stadium to roads, water, and power, all key infrastructure is on course, and we are confident that Wajir will be ready ahead of time to host a successful Madaraka Day celebration,” Dr Omollo said.

He underscored the significance of taking national celebrations to previously unhosted regions, terming it a step towards inclusivity and balanced development.
“This will be a historic moment for the people of Wajir and the entire Northern Kenya region. As a Government, we are proud to take national celebrations to all parts of the country, ensuring that every region feels part of our national journey and development,” he added.
Dr Omollo further revealed that a series of exhibitions and public engagement activities will be rolled out in the lead-up to the celebrations, in line with this year’s theme, Education, Skills, and the Future.
The Government maintained that all critical components are being closely monitored, assuring Kenyans that the country will mark Madaraka Day in Wajir with a well-organised and successful national event.
