Kenya was recently rocked by waves of protests led by Gen Z, ignited by frustrations over issues like high taxation, rising unemployment, graft, and unfulfilled government promises. The protests reached their peak when demonstrators stormed Parliament, prompting a decisive response from President William Ruto.

In a strategic move to address the concerns, the president withdrew the contentious Finance Bill and dissolved his cabinet. This marked the beginning of a series of reforms aimed at quelling unrest and rebuilding public trust.

To curb perceptions of opulence among government officials, President Ruto barred state officers from making contributions to fundraisers, addressing claims that such acts stemmed from the misuse of public funds.

A notable step was the appointment of Eng. Eric Muriithi Muuga, a Gen Z, as Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation. This inclusion symbolized a direct effort to address generational representation in leadership.

Additionally, the president restructured his approach to foreign assignments. For instance, Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki led Kenya’s delegation to Botswana for the presidential inauguration of Duma Gideon Boko, accompanied by a lean team of legislators and senators. Similarly, at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi represented the president with a streamlined delegation. This marked a departure from the past, where large entourages drew public criticism.

President Ruto has also been a strong advocate for Africa’s need for greater funding to combat climate change, emphasizing that while the continent suffers the most, its industrial emissions remain minimal. By scaling back on foreign travel extravagance, he appears to be aligning with the Gen Z call for accountability and prudent resource management.

The president’s recent actions demonstrate a willingness to engage and respond to public discontent, signaling a shift toward a more inclusive and responsive governance model.
