Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto has been elected the new chairperson of the East African Community (EAC), succeeding South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir, whose one-year term has come to an end.

During the 24th Ordinary Summit of the EAC Heads of State in Arusha, Tanzania, on Friday, November 29, President Ruto lauded Kiir’s leadership, calling it “exemplary” and “visionary.”
“Under Salva Kiir’s steady stewardship, the EAC has made remarkable strides in deepening integration and achieving progress in key areas that define our shared aspirations,” President Ruto said.
Focus on Political Confederation and Economic Growth
President Ruto assumes the chairmanship at a pivotal time for the eight-member bloc, as it works towards establishing a political confederation to enhance regional integration. He underscored Kenya’s commitment to championing this ambitious agenda.
“The ambition of an EAC Political Confederation is an extraordinary journey towards the integration of our region,” he said, acknowledging the challenges ahead but emphasizing the immense potential benefits.

During his tenure, Ruto pledged to prioritize improving the quality of life for East African citizens through economic transformation.
“We will focus on increasing competitiveness, promoting value-added production, boosting intra-regional trade, and driving investments. These pillars are essential for transforming partner states’ economies, creating jobs, and ensuring sustainable development,” he added.
Eliminating Barriers to Trade
President Ruto highlighted the critical role of trade in driving economic growth and regional integration. He called for the removal of internal trade barriers and enhanced infrastructure connectivity to create a seamless trading environment.
“We must eliminate non-tariff barriers, enhance infrastructure connectivity, and foster regulatory harmonisation. These efforts will propel the EAC’s competitiveness and economic growth,” he stated.
A Vision for a United and Prosperous EAC
As the EAC Chair, Ruto committed to advancing a stable and competitive East Africa, emphasizing cooperation and collaboration to build a single continental market.
“We must harness emerging opportunities and build a more stable and competitive EAC that will accelerate the creation of a single continental market,” he said.

The President’s agenda seeks to build on the progress achieved under his predecessor and drive the region towards deeper integration and sustainable development.
