Kisumu Governor Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o has flagged off KSh18 million worth of tools and equipment for 28 Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) across the county, saying the investment will equip over 6,500 trainees with modern, industry-standard skills.

Speaking during the ceremony at City Hall on Monday, Nyong’o said the initiative marks a decisive step in transforming technical training into a key driver of youth employment and enterprise growth.
“We are not just here to hand over tools and equipment, but to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to empowering our youth, strengthening our technical skills sector, and driving our county toward a prosperous and self-reliant future,” the governor said.
The tools, which will be distributed to VTCs in all eight sub-counties, will support courses such as electrical installation, plumbing, garment making, welding, beauty therapy, and ICT. The governor noted that the move aligns with the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) model, which emphasizes hands-on learning to ensure graduates are job-ready.
“Every tool we flag off today is a seed we are planting, a seed that will grow into small businesses, innovations, and skilled employment,” Nyong’o said. “By equipping our VTCs, we are investing in future artisans, technicians, and entrepreneurs of Kisumu County.”

He urged trainees to make full use of the resources, stressing that technical skills can open doors both locally and internationally.
“Learn diligently, innovate boldly, and remember that the skills you acquire here can transform not just your own life, but also your community,” he told the youth.
The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding access to vocational training and linking graduates to labour market opportunities in Kenya and abroad.
The flag-off follows a recent vocational training conference hosted at Akado Vocational Training Centre, where stakeholders discussed ways to strengthen CBET and technical education in the county.
