Asset financier Mogo has pledged sustained support for boda boda operators in Nyanza and the wider Western Kenya region after officially reopening the renovated Kisumu County Boda Boda Association offices that were recently destroyed by fire.

The blaze had disrupted the daily operations of hundreds of riders who rely on the facility for coordination, dispute resolution, welfare services, communication and administrative support. On Monday, Mogo, working with its partners, handed back the fully rebuilt and furnished offices, restoring a critical hub for the county’s motorcycle transport sector.
“Mogo has always been at the heart of supporting boda boda operators, not only by helping them acquire new motorcycles at affordable prices and access flexible financing, but also by actively contributing to their social and economic wellbeing,” said Margaret Waithaka, Mogo Kenya’s Regional Manager for Nyanza.
She said the company continues to empower riders through financial literacy training, responsible borrowing education and community-based initiatives, including programmes aimed at addressing social challenges such as teen pregnancies in various parts of the country.

Following the fire incident, the Kisumu County Boda Boda Association appealed to Mogo for assistance. In response, the financier fully funded the renovation and reconstruction of the offices to enable a seamless resumption of services for riders.
The reopening ceremony also featured a tree-planting exercise, a free motorcycle service clinic and engagement activities for association members. One of Mogo’s partners, Bajaj, donated a brand-new motorcycle to the County boda boda chairman.
The boda boda sector remains a cornerstone of Kenya’s economy. A recent Viffa Consult report estimates that the industry generates about Sh660 billion annually, accounting for 4.4 per cent of Kenya’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The sector directly employs more than 2.5 million people, supporting millions of households nationwide, with Western Kenya accounting for a significant share of riders.
Mogo said its continued investment in the sector reflects its commitment to strengthening sustainable livelihoods and reinforcing the positive social and economic impact of boda boda operators across Kenyan communities.
