The media fraternity in Kenya is in mourning following the sudden death of Festus Amimo, the head of KBC’s Mayienga FM, who passed away in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Journalists, fans, and leaders across the country have flooded social media with heartfelt tributes, describing Amimo as a dedicated broadcaster whose passion, integrity, and warm personality left an indelible mark on the industry.
Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo mourned Amimo as “a warm soul, a steady presence and a true friend,” praising his leadership as head of KBC Dholuo–Mayienga Radio and as Chair of the Luo Journalists Association.
“His kindness and humility touched everyone around him,” Dr. Omollo said in his eulogy. “His passion for storytelling shaped countless voices and strengthened the profession.”
Eliud Owalo, Deputy Chief of Staff in the Executive Office of the President, also expressed grief, hailing Amimo as a dedicated and passionate leader who served Mayienga FM with excellence.
“My heartfelt condolences go to his wife and children, his entire family, colleagues, friends, and all those whose lives he touched,” Owalo wrote, noting that Amimo’s commitment to the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation was unwavering.
Colleagues at KBC revealed that Amimo was actively chatting in the company WhatsApp group until around 11 p.m. on Saturday night, jovially discussing Arsenal’s 2–1 loss to Aston Villa. They said he showed no signs of distress before his unexpected passing.
Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi described the veteran broadcaster’s death as “devastating,” calling him a consummate media professional and “a communicator par excellence.”
“Through his morning show, Gari Mokinyi, Festus touched countless lives with his voice, wisdom, and humor,” CS Wandayi said. “I have personally lost a very close friend.”
Until his death, Amimo served as Head of KBC’s Mayienga FM, breakfast show host, and chairman of the Jofuambo Welfare Group.
His body has been moved from the City Mortuary to Montezuma Funeral Home in Nairobi as preparations for burial begin.
