Kisumu City Manager Abala Wanga has officially announced that leadership elections for Kibuye Market, the largest market in the region, will take place in April 2025. This development comes after years of leadership wrangles that have fueled insecurity, including a tragic incident on July 1, which claimed two lives.

Speaking during a security meeting at Kibuye Market on Friday, Wanga emphasized the city’s commitment to fostering a safe and conducive environment for traders and customers. He pledged improvements in critical services such as water, electricity, and waste management, promising additional lighting around the market to enhance security.

The meeting, attended by Kisumu Central Sub-County Police Commander Peter Mulai, Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) for Kisumu Central, and other security agencies, sought to address the market’s security concerns ahead of the elections. The DCC assured traders that security measures, including increased patrols by plainclothes officers and collaboration with city inspectorate teams, are already in place to maintain order.
“We don’t entertain any kind of wrangles here. This market is solely for trading activities, and no political affairs will be allowed,” stated the DCC firmly.
Wanga reiterated that the elections would be well-organized and closely supervised to ensure peace and fairness. He called on traders to embrace coexistence and avoid actions that could disrupt market operations.

Beyond the elections, Wanga assured Kisumu residents that the city is intensifying efforts to combat insecurity, engaging estates and communities in strategies to curb crime. He expressed optimism that within six months, crime rates in Kisumu would significantly decline.
The April 2025 elections are seen as a crucial step toward restoring stability and effective leadership at Kibuye Market, ushering in a new era of order and prosperity.
