Kisumu is witnessing mounting tension as religious leaders, youths, and residents voice growing concerns over a spate of abductions targeting government critics. Allegations that state operatives may be involved have sparked criticism and calls for accountability.

Arch Bishop Dr. Washington Ogonyo Ngede of the Power of Jesus Church, condemned the abductions, urging the government to cease what he termed as unconstitutional actions. He demanded adherence to due process, emphasizing that critics should face the law in court if accused of wrongdoing.

“These abductions remind us of colonial-era tactics when individuals were silenced through torture for expressing dissent,” Bishop Ogonyo Ngede said during a press briefing on Wednesday. “This threatens national peace and erodes the confidence of our youth in democratic processes.”

Dr Ogonyo expressed solidarity with affected families, calling for immediate investigations and a halt to the practice. “As a church, we stand with grieving families and pray for the safe return of their loved ones. Those responsible must act responsibly and demonstrate care for the nation’s future.”

Youths Split Over Issue

The youth response has been divided. United Democratic Alliance (UDA) National Youth Leader Hon. Cedrick Mike Otieno appealed for calm and cooperation with the government. Speaking in Kisumu on Thursday, Cedrick assured the public that authorities, including Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and Principal Secretary for National Administration Raymond Omollo, are working to identify and apprehend the culprits.

“We have been assured that investigations are ongoing and the perpetrators will soon be unmasked,” Cedrick stated. He also urged citizens to provide actionable information to assist in the probe and cautioned youths against misusing social media platforms for blackmail or misinformation.

“We must use our freedom of expression responsibly, especially online,” Cedrick said. “The government is committed to ensuring safety, but we must also be mindful of how we address leadership issues.”

Public Discontent

Residents, however, remain skeptical. Jackline Atieno, a Kisumu resident, criticized the abductions and demanded that missing individuals be brought before a court if found guilty of any offense.

“We cannot continue losing our youths without any trace or explanation,” Atieno lamented.

The government’s handling of the situation has drawn mixed reactions, with calls for transparency and swift action to restore public trust. Meanwhile, families of the abducted are left in anguish, awaiting justice as pressure mounts on the state to address the growing insecurity and uphold human rights.

As the situation unfolds, Kisumu residents demand answers, fearing the implications of unchecked abductions on Kenya’s democratic fabric.
