The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a police officer attached to Kisumu’s Mamboleo Police Post for soliciting and receiving a bribe of KES 15,000 to obstruct the course of justice.

Sergeant Gilbert Kiama Oduor was apprehended on January 28, 2026, during a sting operation at the Winam Law Courts after he allegedly received the illicit payment from a complainant.

The arrest followed investigations triggered by a report that the officer was demanding a bribe from a family whose relative had been arrested on allegations of possessing bhang. According to the Commission, officers from Mamboleo Police Post, led by the area chief, had earlier raided the home of John Oluoch. Although no narcotics were recovered, Oluoch was arrested and booked at the police post on January 23, 2026.

Subsequent inquiries established that when the family followed up on the matter, they were referred to Sergeant Kiama, who allegedly demanded KES 15,000 to ensure Oluoch would not be arraigned in court. The complainant reported the demand to the EACC.

Further investigations revealed that while in custody between January 23 and January 28, 2026, Oluoch was allegedly facilitated by officers at the police post to solicit the bribe money from his relatives. Despite the payment demand, he was eventually taken to court.

On January 28, EACC officers mounted an operation that culminated in the arrest of Sergeant Kiama at the Winam Law Courts as he received the KES 15,000 bribe.

The suspect was booked at the Railways and Ports Police Station, processed, and later released on bond pending the completion of investigations.

In a statement, the Commission warned public officers against engaging in corrupt practices and reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating bribery at public service delivery points to enhance access to quality services for all citizens.
