Kepher Otieno, a senior journalist and editor with the People Daily newspaper under the MediaMax Network, was viciously attacked in the early hours of Saturday morning during a violent home invasion in Nyamasaria, Kisumu East Sub-County.

The incident occurred at around 2:00AM when a gang of five unidentified assailants stormed Otieno’s home, broke down the door, and launched a brutal assault.

“I was attacked at around 2am. They broke into the house, ransacked everything and stole two televisions and a laptop,” Otieno recounted. “They then demanded our phones. I was with my brother, Caleb Onyango. They took our phones, slapped my son who ran and hid, and ordered us to remain silent.”

Otieno said the attackers descended on him with crude weapons, targeting his head. “Five people confronted me and started beating me. When I was overwhelmed and bleeding, I surrendered my phone,” he said. “As I lay injured, I could hear someone outside asking if they had finished me.”

He was rushed to a Kisumu hospital for emergency treatment and is currently recovering.

Despite the traumatic ordeal, Otieno said he harbours no grudge against anyone and insisted he has no known disputes. “I am innocent. I have never interfered with anyone’s affairs,” he said.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear. Police in Kisumu have launched investigations into the incident.
