The long-running animosity between boda boda operators and a machete-wielding gang known as “Mbogi” in Kisumu has been resolved following the intervention of Kisumu Central Police Commander and Kisumu Residents Association activist, Audi Ogada.

The truce comes in the wake of heightened tensions after a member of the boda boda community allegedly killed one of Mbogi’s leaders, identified as Troon, over the weekend. Enraged by the killing, Mbogi retaliated on Sunday by storming Elgons in Kibos and torching the Kisumu County Boda Boda office, leading to destruction of property.
Speaking at Kisumu Central Police Station on Monday, County Boda Boda Chairman Jacob Ochieng Ogambo confirmed that peace had been restored and both groups had agreed to put aside revenge.
“Our agenda was peace. We’ve agreed, and we will not hide or tolerate anyone in the boda boda sector who soils our name. Boy Akoth, will re-construct the office and restore what was destroyed. We’ve shaken hands,” Ogambo said.

Businessman Willis Akoth, popularly known as Boy Akoth and leader of Mbogi, also pledged his group’s commitment to the deal, confirming that reconstruction of the burnt office will begin on Tuesday, August 26.
The agreement marks a major step in easing tensions between the rival groups, whose clashes have previously threatened peace and security in Kisumu’s central business area.
