Young lawyers from the Luo Nyanza region, under the Young Okil Kamaloka Association, have sharply criticized former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for what they termed as a reckless and unfounded statement regarding the use of illicit brews in Central Kenya.

Young Okil Kamaloka Association, President Chabi Brian Otieno

Association President Chabi Brian Otieno condemned Gachagua’s claims, stating that they implied a deliberate government targeting of a specific region, a notion he described as baseless and inflammatory.

“It is unimaginable that the government, entrusted with the protection of its citizens, would engage in such acts,” Otieno remarked, adding that Gachagua’s comments suggest either complicity or negligence in addressing issues affecting his community.

The lawyers urged investigative authorities to summon Gachagua to provide evidence for his claims or desist from making divisive remarks. “We categorically call on him to file an official complaint or cease inciting Mt. Kenya against the government,” Otieno said.

Otieno further appealed to the church to denounce such rhetoric and safeguard the sanctity of its pulpit. He noted that alcoholism and illicit brews are national vices that transcend ethnicity or region and require a united effort to combat.

Speaking in Rangwe Sub-County, Homa Bay, on Christmas Eve, Otieno emphasized the need for a comprehensive and united approach to tackling the issue. The remarks came during the Dr. Chabi Super Cup, a football tournament aimed at engaging youth in productive activities to curb alcoholism.

The tournament, organized by the Young Lawyers Association, will conclude on Christmas Day. Otieno called on all Kenyans, including Gachagua, to join hands with the government in the fight against illicit brews, stating that the challenge should unite rather than divide the country.

“The fight against alcoholism requires a collective effort. Let us rise above divisive rhetoric and work together for the betterment of our nation,” he concluded.
