Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum Opiyo Wandayi has lauded the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) Foundation for commissioning a modern computer laboratory at Ong’eche Secondary School in Nyando Sub-County, Kisumu County, a Ksh5 million project he described as a “gamechanger” for digital learning in the region.

Speaking during the official commissioning of the lab on Friday, Wandayi urged KPC to extend such transformative initiatives beyond Kisumu to other parts of the country.

“This project has cost Ksh5 million, and it is a gamechanger in the sense that students of this community will now train in computer science and compete with the rest of the country,” Wandayi stated. “As a ministry, we remain forever proud of KPC Foundation, and indeed the parent company, for continuing to support such noble causes.”

Wandayi said the investment is already yielding results, citing increased student enrolment and improved access to digital education. For the first time in the school’s history, students at Ong’eche will sit for their computer studies examinations in 2026.

“The inclusion of junior secondary students from neighbouring schools further extends the reach of this facility, demonstrating the power of shared resources,” he added.

The Energy CS, flanked by Nyando MP Jared Okello and Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga, announced that over the next two days, three major development projects worth Ksh20.7 million will be launched in Kisumu and Siaya counties, all funded by the KPC Foundation.

Among the upcoming projects is a block housing twin science laboratories and a classroom at Dr. Iddah Odinga Girls Secondary School, which aims to ease infrastructure pressure in the newly established institution. Additionally, a new school bus will be unveiled at Rangala Boys Secondary School to support academic and co-curricular activities.

Wandayi also highlighted KPC Foundation’s broader footprint in Nyanza, where it has invested Ksh26 million in recent years toward education infrastructure. This includes:

  • A 100-capacity dormitory at Siburi Mixed Secondary School in Homa Bay
  • Two classrooms at Lambwe Special School
  • A dormitory and laboratory at Simbi Secondary School
  • Administration and ablution blocks at Kowuor Primary School
  • A multipurpose hall at St. Mary’s School

“These investments represent hope, opportunity, and the belief that every child deserves a conducive environment to dream and achieve,” said Wandayi, emphasizing the government’s support for such public-private partnerships.

The CS also called on other corporate organizations to follow KPC’s lead and channel their Corporate Social Investments into sustainable, community-driven projects.

“Let these facilities serve as stepping stones for innovation, hard work, and excellent achievement,” he told students. “Education is the most powerful tool that can change your life and the trajectory of your families and communities.”

Wandayi reiterated the government’s commitment to leveraging such collaborations to advance the Sustainable Development Goals and Vision 2030, particularly in education, health, and access to clean water and sanitation.

“These are not one-off donations but legacies that will benefit generations,” he concluded.
