The Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) now boasts a state-of-the-art kitchen, generously donated by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
“This modern kitchen is not just prepared for its official launch; it’s fully equipped and ready to significantly enhance meal services at JOOTRH,” the hospital announced.

In a brief ceremony at the facility on Thursday, Evelyn Koech, Team Lead for UNDP’s Environment and Resilience Unit, officially handed over the keys and documents to the hospital’s Director of Finance and Administration, Joshua Okise. Patients, staff, and visitors will now enjoy fresh, nutritious meals prepared with advanced safety and efficiency.
Dr. Okise expressed deep gratitude to UNDP for its support, particularly as JOOTRH transitions to county cooperative status. The kitchen’s features include temperature-controlled storage, automated monitoring, and rigorous hygiene protocols, ensuring top food safety standards.
The advanced kitchen equipment enables streamlined meal preparation, serving more people in less time while offering staff development opportunities through training on cutting-edge technology and practices. This major improvement at JOOTRH supports both patient care and staff development, underscoring a commitment to sustainability.
Meanwhile, dialysis patients at JOOTRH will also benefit from seven newly installed online HDF machines. With this addition, JOOTRH joins Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital and Nairobi Hospital as one of only three facilities in Kenya equipped with this advanced renal technology. Online HDF offers superior toxin removal from the blood, enhancing quality of life for kidney disease patients.
