In a dramatic turn of events, a seven-storey building under construction in Rongo town, Migori County, collapsed on Christmas Day, sparking an intense rescue operation. Emergency teams scrambled to the scene after receiving a distress call at 2 p.m., but hours of excavation have revealed no casualties beneath the rubble.

Migori County Chief Officer for Medical Services, Samuel Atula, confirmed that the site was devoid of workers during the incident.

“Based on information from the site foreman and the watchwoman, no workers were scheduled to be on-site today,” he said.

The watchwoman, who was present during the collapse, managed to escape unharmed after noticing the structure trembling.

Atula added that the security guard and two individual from a neighboring house were taken to a local hospital, where they were treated for soft tissue injuries and discharged shortly thereafter.

Construction Suspended Prior to Collapse

The National Construction Authority (NCA) revealed that the project had been suspended prior to the collapse due to concerns over its structural integrity. A routine quality assurance check had flagged issues, prompting the NCA to halt construction until a structural integrity report was submitted.

“The collapse of this building underscores the importance of adherence to construction regulations,” the NCA said in a statement, promising a thorough investigation. “Any parties found to have contravened the law will face the full force of justice.”

Authorities Vow Action

Senior Deputy County Commissioner for Rongo Sub-County, Joshua Matundura, emphasized the importance of regulatory compliance. “Starting this Friday, we will inspect all ongoing construction projects in Rongo to ensure strict adherence to building standards,” he warned.

Despite the absence of casualties, the collapse serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by substandard construction practices. Migori County authorities have pledged additional resources, including excavators and other machinery, to conclude rescue efforts and investigate the incident fully.

This incident raises critical questions about accountability in the construction industry as authorities and the public await the findings of the NCA’s investigation.
