In a sea of excitement, Kisumu Senator Prof. Tom Ojienda stole the spotlight during a meet-the-people tour following the AfSNET Investment Conference held at the Grand Royal City in Kisumu on November 26, 2024.

While President William Ruto drew immense crowds at Riat, Kondele, and Kisumu’s CBD, it was the scene at Kisumu Boys’ roundabout that took a dramatic turn. A throng of supporters demanded Prof. Ojienda take the microphone, eager to hear directly from the popular senator.

Clearly moved by the moment, Prof. Ojienda humbly addressed the crowd, sharing optimism for the region’s future under a unified government. “We are now in one government,” he declared, emphasizing his commitment to Kisumu’s development. Ojienda also threw his weight behind Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union chairmanship, urging locals to rally behind the veteran leader.

“We support Raila and want him to become the AU chairman. We will also reinstate the Kazi Mtaani program to provide jobs for our youth, addressing unemployment and reducing insecurity in the region,” Ojienda affirmed, his words met with thunderous applause.

As cheers echoed across the crowd, it became evident that Prof. Ojienda’s charisma and grassroots connection had struck a chord. Whispers from the crowd hinted at the senator’s rising popularity, with many seeing him as a front-runner for Kisumu’s gubernatorial race.

The Race for Kisumu Governor Heats Up
With Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o’s tenure nearing its end, speculation is rife over who will succeed him. Among those eyeing the coveted seat are Kisumu Central MP Dr. Joshua Oron, Nyakach MP Aduma Owuor, Deputy Governor Dr. Mathew Ochieng Owili, and Kisumu West MP Rosa Buyu, who has yet to formally declare her intentions. However, Ojienda’s electrifying reception may give him an edge in the unfolding political drama.

As the political stakes rise, Prof. Ojienda’s performance at the meet-the-people tour has set a high bar, solidifying his status as one of Kisumu’s most influential leaders. The race for Kisumu’s top seat promises to be a battle to watch.
